Escape & Explore: Day Trips from Carlsbad, NM

Living in Carlsbad means being centrally located in relation to some of the Southwest's most awe-inspiring natural and cultural wonders. From subterranean adventures to artistic atmospheres or adrenaline-fueled discovery, these suggested day trips from Carlsbad are guaranteed to create lasting memories just hours from home. Here at Avalon at Carlsbad, New Mexicos premier apartment community, we want to help residents come up with ways to explore the amazing state that we call home. Read on to discover our five favorite day trips from Carlsbad.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park: Underworld Adventure

Only 20 miles southwest of downtown Carlsbad is an underworld adventure situated within one of the most famous cave systems in the world. Carlsbad Caverns National Park contains more than 119 caves, with the Big Room larger than 14 football fields. A self-guided tour takes about 1.5 hours, and the Natural Entrance trail is a 1.25-mile hike down into the belly of the caves.

In the summer, don't miss the bat flight program where, on certain nights, hundreds of thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from the entrance in a swirling wonder. The earlier you get there, the better. This is because they emerge at sunset, and people flock here from miles away for this natural phenomenon.

Roswell: Out of This World Exploration

Drive about two hours northeast and you'll arrive in Roswell. Known for its alien activity, Roswell is much more than an extraterrestrial experience, even though it had its fifteen minutes of fame in 1947 due to one incident. The International UFO Museum and Research Center explains the situation that brought Roswell to the attention of the nation, so be sure to stop in and learn about this scientific exploration gone wrong. If aliens aren't your thing, take time to spend at the Roswell Museum and Art Center, which boasts one of the best collections of NM contemporary art.

You can also plan a day trip to Spring River Park and Zoo, and then enjoy New Mexican cuisine at a local green chile joint for lunch. A day trip to Roswell can be rich with both education, fun, and great food.

White Sands National Park: A Different World

About two hours to the west, you'll feel like you're on another planet. White Sands National Park features bright white gypsum dunes that gleam under the blue skies and encircling mountain ranges. There are different hiking trails offered, including the Interdune Boardwalk, which is an easier walk, and the more challenging Alkali Flat Trail. If you're a hiker, there's something for every skill set.

Don't forget to bring a sled to sand sled down the sand hills. All visitors will enjoy the quick thrill of sliding down to the bottom, and the visitor center is thorough in explaining this ecological wonder, along with its vegetation and wildlife.

Lincoln National Forest: Natural Wonderland

Another easy day trip from Carlsbad is Lincoln National Forest, which spans multiple mountain ranges. Explore Sitting Bull Falls for a beautiful 150-foot waterfall and natural swimming holes (great for hot summer days). The easy hike to get to the falls is great for users of any skill level or age.

The national forest is an ideal summer camping getaway, with rock climbing and wildlife photography easily accessible both in the forest and outside of it. Wander through desert landscapes, pine forest flooring, and alpine meadows.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas

Just a short drive across the state line, enjoy a fantastic day in Texas at Guadalupe Mountains National Park, just 45 minutes away from Carlsbad. With Texas's highest peak, the hiking here is some of the Southwest's best. The Devil's Hall Trail is moderately difficult and takes you through a narrow canyon, but advanced hikers can attempt to reach the top of Guadalupe Peak.

If you're visiting in the fall, don't miss the lovely autumn foliage at McKittrick Canyon, known as one of the prettiest places in Texas. With over 1,000 species of plants and diverse fauna, this is a park with many ecosystems.

Things to Keep in Mind for Day Trips

Be mindful of the season and temperatures when taking these day trips from Carlsbad. The rugged desert can be hot in the summer, but the mountains offer cooler temperatures. Be prepared with appropriate clothing, water, and snacks, as well as any other personal items you need.

Most of these locations are a short drive away, too. The highways are clean and easy to maneuver as you make your way from Carlsbad to these wonderful spots. Make sure to check national and state park information for current conditions and fees, and even special programming that may suit your needs while visiting.
